Busy Volleyball Sundays Ahead

Last Sunday saw a volleyball marathon in the Perth & Kinross Area.

The Perth & Kinross Boys’ Junior National League team played their opening fixture in this season’s Scottish Volleyball League Championship at home against current champions, City of Edinburgh. City of Edinburgh have been longstanding champions at this level so it was a tough baptism for the P & K boys in this, their second season of competition at this level. As expected City of Edinburgh stormed ahead to take the first set 25-12. The second set saw the home side keep level pegging with the championship favourites but they couldn’t sustain this and eventually succumbed 25-20. The third set also went to the visiting side 15-10. This was a tough start for the lads but it will stand them in good stead for the next round of fixtures in early January.

It was on to Bell’s Sports Centre next for the second round of Premier League fixtures with both Kinross sides, Scotrange and Kintronics failing to field full sides due to injuries and school/university exams. This meant that the games they played were forfeit resulting in no league points being awarded for any wins.

Craig Donaldson’s Kinross Scotrange opened against Stuart Anderson’s Hitting Bricks and although the result was a foregone conclusion an exciting game developed with Bricks taking the first set and Scotrange the second. Bricks led the third set 8-6 at the final whistle.. Steve Martin’s SoVoBo, meanwhile were playing Kintronics and this too was close with the Kinross side edging a pointless victory 25-22; 25-23. The two Kinross sides then met with Scotrange winning the first set 25-13, Kintronics the second set 25-18, the third set being tied at 12 points each at the final whistle.

Ian McGrath’s league leaders Mental Eagles took on Gregor Walkers’ undefeated Dodgy Spikers. Eagles took the early initiative to lead 7-4 but Spikers got their act together with the score progressing point for point until it reached 16 points each. Spikers’ stunned their opponents by scoring five points without reply before moving on to seal the set 25-20. The second set was just as close, poised at 19 points each with one minute remaining. Again Spikers stormed the next three points to lead 22-19 at the final whistle, maintaining their one hundred per cent record. Colin McGinlay’s Team Fife were next on court playing Hitting Bricks. The Fife side edged the first set 25-17 but the second set was even closer, Team Fife eventually pulling away to win 25-23. Team Fife kept in touch with the league leaders, defeating Scotrange by two sets to love.

SoVoBo and Mental Eagles were next on court with Eagles winning both sets by 25 points to 15 thus keeping their championship aspirations alive.

Final game of the evening saw Dodgy Spikers take on Hitting Bricks with Spikers maintaining their undefeated record intact winning 25-19; 25-20.

This Sunday sees the Perth & Kinross Under 18 Boys’ team play their final round of fixtures at their home venue of Loch Leven Campus  in Scottish Volleyball’s national championsips.
