Fifers Tops in Perth

Colin McGinlay’s Team Fife finished 2016 on top of Perth & Kinross District Volleyball’s Premier League, making it a Fife double with Dunfermline Phoenix currently leading Perth’s  Recreational League.

Although Team Fife lead at the moment, Gregor Walker’s Dodgy Spikers are just behind and with two games in hand are poised to overtake the Glenrothes based side in the new year.

Team Fife were first in action against Ian McGrath’s Mental Eagles who were in fine form winning 25-21; 25-15. In their other game against Steve Martin’s SoVoBo they fared much better with the Fifers dominating play, going on to win 25-19; 25-9.

SoVoBo also lost out in a thrilling but ill-tempered encounter against Craig Donaldson’s Scotrange. Scotrange also played Mental Eagles and this was a real close fought match. Scotrange, with three Donaldson family members in their line-up, just edged the first set 25-23 but the Perth side pulled away to level the game with a 25-19 second set win. The third set was tied at three points each before Scotrange pulled ahead to lead 12-4 at full time.

Gregor Walker’s Dodgy Spikers, the only side to have won all their games to date, met fellow rivals Hitting Bricks. Gary Birrell had Bricks pumped up for this one and they quickly established an eleven points to five lead. Spikers then came back into the game and it was neck and neck as the scores rose to eighteen points each. Spikers then turned the screw eventually winning 25-21; 25-15.

Bricks then took on a rejuvenated Kintronics’ side with four players aged 16 or under. The first set started off fairly evenly before Bricks blasted ahead to win 25-16. The second set saw the Kinross youngsters get more into the game but it wasn’t to be with Bricks running out 25-19 winners. Dodgy Spikers also dumped the young Kintonics side in their first set 25-13 but the second set saw Kintronics give as good as they got until the score reached 15 points each and then they appeared to run out of steam with Spikers winning 25-20. The final game of the evening featured Team Fife and Hitting Bricks. Team Fife eased ahead in the first set to win 25-21 but had to come from behind in the second set to win by a similar score and thus finish the year on top of the table.

The Perth leagues now have a festive break until Sunday 8th January when the Recreational League resumes.
