Sunday evening’s Premier Volleyball League games at Bell’s Sports Centre saw the title race take another turn with three teams battling it out for this season’s league title.
Colin McGinlay’s Glenrothes based Team Fife came from third place up to first with close fought wins as well as thanks to other teams results against their main challengers. Fifers opened against Jamie Salvin’s Dodgy Spikers with Spikers taking the first set 25-18. Back came Fifers in the second set to level the game with a 25-19 score taking the game to a third set decider. Fifers strode to a 5-0 lead and Spikers fight back was too little too late with McGinley’s musketeers leading 13-7 at full time. Fifers then met Ian McGrath’s league leaders Mental Eagles and found themselves wanting as they crashed to a 12-25 first set defeat. The second set saw the Fifers rally and edge out the league leaders 25-20 setting up another third set decider. The Fife side stormed ahead 7-1 but an amazing come-back from Eagles saw them claw back to a two points’ difference before time was called, Fifers leading 10-8. Fifers followed this with an easier two sets to love win against Doug Crockart’s SoVoBo to sit at the top of the table by two points with one more game played.
Kinross sides Scotrange and Kintronics played each other in a local derby with Craig Donaldson’s Scotrange, back to full strength with Mark Cathro and Connor Boyle back in their ranks, again coming out on top to win 2-0. Scotrange then took on Mental Eagles and Team Fife can thank their Kinross neighbours for dumping the title challengers 25-21; 25-17.
Jack Watson’s Kintronics then had a close match against Stuart Anderson’s Hitting Bricks. Bricks won the first set fairly convincingly 25-14 but the second set was poised on a knife edge before Bricks cemented victory 27-25.
Both Spikers and Bricks also dumped SoVoBo to round off the evening’s play.
