Sunday’s Recreational League Volleyball saw everything change at the top of the table with some very close games leaving Ian McGrath’s Motley Crew as the only team with a one hundred per cent record closely followed by a “pack” of teams waiting for them to slip up.
Jayne Cafferty’s Hitting Bricks were first on court one meeting Kat Thomson’s Kinross Mongrels. Bricks had a solid win against the Kinross side to the tune of 25-10; 25-12, following this up with another powerful performance against Lewis Crockart’s Perth High “A” winning 25-9; 25-10 to keep their championship aspirations very much alive. Mongrels got back on track with a 25-9; 25-10 win against Perth High “B” who had earlier lost out to Aberfeldy 25-18; 25-17. Mary Cook’s league leaders Aberfeldy then took on Ian McGrath’s Motley Crew. Crew “swabbed the decks” with the Breadalbane side, winning 25-13; 25-16 inflicting a first defeat of the season on Aberfeldy. Crew then dumped Perth High “A” to top the table with an impressive 25-16; 25-22 victory.
Mark Cathro’s Kinross High School opened their Sunday evening with an exciting encounter against Susan Scott’s Plus Perth Mental Health. The first set see-sawed back and forth with nice play from both sides but Plus Perth edged it 25-23. The second set was just as close but this time the Kinross High boys won 25-22 just as the final whistle sounded for the first drawn match of the season.
Kinross High then had another close match against Innes Penman’s Hits & Giggles with H & G winning the first set 25-22 and Kinross High leading 24-16 in the second, just failing to get the draw by one set point as the final whistle went. H & G then took full points from Perth High “C” winning 25-19; 25-20.
Plus Perth then took on Kinross BB Wildcats and had an easy first set win to the tune of 25-12. The BB youngsters shocked Plus Perth at the start of the second set taking a 6-0 lead. Plus Perth battled back and the set was much more evenly contested with the score progressing to 15 points each. Plus Perth then went on a scoring run which finishing off the BB side 25-18.
Liz Angus and her Tay Pearls opened their Sunday evening against Perth High “C” and took little time in disposing of the youngsters 25-9; 25-13. The final game of the evening was another close one featuring Tay Pearls and Kinross BB Wildcats. Wilcats came from behind to pip Pearls 25-23 in the first set with Pearls reversing things in the second set to win 25-22. The third set decider went Wildcats way 15-10 to round off another fine Sunday evening’s play.
