Competitive volleyball returned to Bell’s Sports Centre for the first fixtures of the new season in the shape of the Recreational League Cup qualifiers.

There were four sections of three teams with the top two teams from each section meeting in next Sunday’s play-offs.

Section one games saw Motley Crew finish top with wins against Kinross BB and Perth High School “A” with the High School side eventually overcoming the BB team in a thrilling three set match – 21-17; 18-21; 15-9.

Section two saw league newcomers Beeping Smoke Alarms have a great start to volleyball beating local side Hitting Bricks in a close match 25-21; 25-22. Fife side Dunfermline had to withdraw on Sunday afternoon due to player non-availability so both sides qualify for next weekend’s finals.

Section three’s opening game between Kinross Mongrels and Plus Perth saw the Kinross side win the first set 21-15 but Plus Perth fought back to win the second set 21-20 resulting in a draw. Both sides went on to beat Ruth Blaikie and her Perth High “C” team meaning it was a set points count-back to decide first and second place. Mongrels just edged Plus Perth into second place.

Section four opened with Hits and Giggles taking on and beating Kinross Juniors 21-9; 21-14 but Lewis McPherson rallied his Kinross side to win against Gemma Woodhead’s Perth High “B” team 21-8; 21-13 to qualify in second place, Hits & Giggles finishing top after beating the High School side in the last game of the evening.
