Volleyball Premier League Cup Action
Sunday evening saw eight premier league teams meet at Perth College Sports Hall with the teams being split into two sections of four teams.
Section one opened with local sides Dodgy Spikers and Eagles taking to the court with Spikers taking the first set 21-13. Eagles fought back to level the tie with a 21-16 score. With only two minutes remaining the third set decider commenced and it was Eagles who edged ahead to win 2-1.
New side Clackers made their competitive debut against Kinross and they stormed the first set 21-9. The second set was more evenly contested but Clackers finished strongly to win 21-15.
Dodgy Spikers returned to winning ways against Kinross 21-15, 21-17.
The Eagles versus Clackers fixture was another closely fought encounter with the Clackmannanshire side taking the first set 21-14. Eagles rallied in the second set to level the match with a 21-18 score but the third set decider saw the Clackers lead 5-1 at full time.
The Eagles match against Kinross saw the Eagles take the first set 21-15 with Kinross leading in the second set 22-21 as full time was called.
The final match of the section saw the top teams fight it out for their place in the final with Clackers showing their intent by taking the first set 25-22. The second set saw Dodgy Spikers storm to a 7-2 lead and they maintained their dominance throughout but their time ran out with the set finishing 19-12 ahead to see Clackers edge into the final.
Section two’s opening fixtures saw Mental Blocks face Team Fife and it was the Perth side who won through 21-16, 19-12.
Perth VC then met Crieff and the Earnsiders won the first set 21-8 but the second set was a much closer affair with the score tied at 18 points each as the final whistle sounded.
Team Fife then played Perth and won 21-17, 14-9. The Mental Blocks versus Crieff game was very close throughout with Blockers edging the first set 21-19 with Crieff leading in the second set 12-11 at full time.
The first set between Mental Blocks and Perth was also close with Blockers just doing enough to win the first set 21-19 with Perth leading in the second set 6-5 as the full time whistle sounded.
The Crieff versus Team Fife match saw Crieff take the first set 21-13 but the second set saw the Fifers come on to their game and it was poised at 18 points each at full time.
The Final was contested between Mental Blocks and Clackers with Clackers wasting no time in taking a 6-0 lead. Blockers fought back well taking the score to 15 points each as the set progressed eventually edging ahead 18-17 but Clackers finished with a flourish to take the first set 21-18. The second set was also close with the scores at one point tied at 13 points each but with time ran out for Blockers resurgence with them leading 17-14 at the final whistle to end a great night’s volleyball.
There are no games this Sunday with the next fixtures being the Recreational League Cup final stages on the 1st October at Perth College.
