Premier Cup Thriller

Perth & Kinross District Volleyball Association held their opening league cup competition at Perth College on Sunday evening with five teams competing for the silver cup and close doesn’t really go far enough to describe how this season’s competition finished.

Three Perth teams plus Kinross and Fife teams played each other over the superb Perth College facilities in 40-minute matches with 3 points being awarded for winning a complete set, 2 points for leading an incomplete set and 1 point for an incomplete drawn set.

Mental Blocks

It was two Perth teams, Mental Blocks and Eagles who opened on court one with the young Eagles’ side taking the first set 25-15. The second set saw Blockers storm back to level the match 25-11. The third set decider saw Blockers lead 5-2 at full time to scrape through. Jamie Salvin’s Dodgy Spikers then entertained a Kinross side which featured a mixture of experienced players and two 14-year-old lads. Spikers started their cup aspirations with a 25-18; 25-16 victory. Iain Cook’s Blockers’ side then defeated Colin McGinlay’s young Fife side by two sets to love with the Eagles versus Kinross fixture going to a third set decider. It was Kinross who led 5-2 as the final whistle sounded.

Kinross

Mental Blocks then took on local rivals Dodgy Spikers and this was a close fought affair with Blockers taking the first set 25-18 with Spikers leading the second set 23-22 at full time. The Eagles versus Fife fixture was also really close, the Fife side taking the first set 25-22 and Eagles taking the second set 25-20. The third set was poised at one point each at full time resulting in the first drawn match of the season.

Team Fife

Mental Blocks then had a tough first set against a plucky Kinross side but won through 26-24 in the first set and leading the second set 20-16 at full time. Dodgy Spikers saw off the Fife side by two sets to love to keep their trophy hopes alive. The final games of the evening were critical for Spikers who had to win and win well to keep up with Blockers who were ahead of the rest of the field. Spikers defeated Eagles 25-15; 25-15 and Kinross edged a narrow victory over their Fife neighbours 25-22; 22-22.

Dodgy Spikers

With all the points totalled together it showed that Dodgy Spikers just edged out Mental Blocks to win the cup by the slightest of margins.
