Perth District’s Premier volleyball teams met at Bell’s Sports Centre for the first time to open the new season with the Premier League Cup competition.
Six teams were arranged in two sections of three teams with the top two teams qualifying for cross-over semi-finals.
Innes Penman’s Dodgy Spikers opened against Les Sikora’s Eagles. Spikers started strongly but were soon overtaken as Eagles went on a run of points. It was all very close with the score reaching 21 points each before Spikers won the first set 25-22. The second set saw Spikers consolidate with a 25-17 score. Spikers then met Colin McGinley’s Fifers Too, securing victory to earn their semi-final place as section winners. Eagles scraped through against Fifers Too to finish as section runners up and a semi-final slot.
Ben Buzza-s Team Fife opened section two matches with a game against Andy Logan’s new look Mental Blocks. The first set was very evenly matched with the score progressing to 25 points each. A final flurry by Blockers saw them take the next two points to win the set. The second set saw Team Fife settle in to a better rhythm of play although time ran out with then leading 22-15. Both Team Fife and Mental Blocks defeated a very young Scotrange side to progress to the semi-finals.
The Dodgy Spikers semi against Team Fife was close until the score reached 18 points each. A run of four points saw the Fifers edge aheadThe and eventually win through 25-21. The second set saw Spikers revive to lead 20-17 but it wasn’t enough as time ran out on their bid to level things.
Mental Blocks had an easier passage to the final dumping Eagles 25-13; 2514.
Team Fife were determined to put the first match defeat to Mental Blocks to bed as the cup final started and both sides were evenly matched with the score rising to 15 points each. Fifers upped their game to finish stronger, taking the first set 25-21. The second set saw Blockers take control and they were soon 18-11 ahead with minutes left on the clock. Fifers then scored five consecutive points which bought them enough time with the final score being 20-17 in favour of Mental Blocks.
