Volley Good Sunday Thrills

PLUS Perth Add to their Points Total.

Sunday evening’s recreational volleyball league matches produced some really close contests at Perth College on Sunday evening with league leaders PLUS Perth being involved in two out of their three matches.

Brian Hutton’s PLUS Perth side opened against Ian McGrath’s Motley Crew and it was an enthralling contest with PLUS Perth edging the first set 25-22 and Motley Crew leading 24-23 in the second set when full time was called.

Strathallan were next to challenge the league leaders and although they started brightly it was experience which told in the end with the Perth side winning 25-16; 25-17.

Michael Donaldson’s Kinross side were next to face the league leaders and it was all PLUS Perth in the opening flurries as they stormed to a 7-0 lead. Despite fighting back the Perth side won the first set 25-18. The second set was a different affair with the Kinross side taking a 9-2 lead before finally seeing off their opponents 25-21. A third set decider saw PLUS Perth take a 9-4 lead as full time was called to see them stay at the top of the league.

Motley Crew had a very close first set against Amanda Howie’s Tay Pearls with the Pearls letting a 25-24 set point lead slip by them for Crew to win 28-26. The second set was evenly poised at 15 points each before the Crew took a narrow lead at full time 21-18.

Pearls were involved in an even closer match against Strathallan with the school team winning the first set 25-15 only for Pearls to sneak the second set 28-26 setting up another third set decider. This was a real nail biter with the score tied at 2 points each and full time called as the ball was still in play. It was Tay Pearls who grounded the ball to scrape a very narrow victory.

Strathallan played their third and final game of the evening Jayne Cafferty’s Nae Fear and the opening scores progress to five points each before Nae Fear pulled ahead 18-16, completing the win with a 25-20 score which was also matched in the second set to complete the victory.

Nae Fear then took on Bruce Benning’s Aberfeldy, storming to a 15-6 lead which finished up 25-16. The second set was more evenly contested with the score poised at 23 points each before Nae Fear sealed the win by 25 points to 23.

Kinross High School fielded a depleted team and they were overwhelmed by their St John’s Academy team, losing 25-11; 25-18. The Kinross High side also lost out to their other Kinross side by two sets to love.

Final game of the evening saw the St John’s youngsters overcome Aberfeldy 25-15; 25-15.

This Sunday sees the Premier League teams meet at Bell’s Sports Centre for their opening round of fixtures (refereeing team in brackets):
