The penultimate round of Perth Volleyball’s recreational league took place at Perth College on Sunday evening with league leaders Nae Fear extending their unbeaten record and looking unstoppable for this season’s league title.
Their opening game against St Juan saw them take a 9-2 lead before the St John’s Academy team got into their stride to keep close to the league leaders with the score at 18-16 but the champions elect got going again to take the first set 25-17. The second set was a closer affair with St Juan leading 21-18 but a storming finish from Nae Fear saw them score eight points without reply to record victory.
Nae Fear’s second match was against Tay Pearls and it was Pearls who were always chasing the game although they came close at 15-17 before going down 17-25. The second set saw Pearls poised for a surprise, leading 21-18 but another storming finish saw the league leaders win 25-21 to virtually secure the league title.
St Juan pushed PLUS Perth all the way in a thrilling encounter which saw the youngsters eventually lose out 21-25; 23-25. Tay Pearls second match was against Kinross High School and although they won the first set comfortably 25-12, the Kinross youngsters upped their game in the second set and lost by the narrowest of margins 23-25.
There were two particularly close matches on Sunday evening, the first featuring Aberfeldy against Crieff. The Crieff youngsters won the first set 25-20 only for Aberfeldy to level the match winning the second set by the same score. The third set saw Aberfeldy dominate to win the match 15-10.
The second close match was Kinross v Motley Crew with the Crew coming from behind to win 25-16. The second set saw Kinross level the match with a 25-13 win before going on to lead the third set decider 14-11.
In the other game Motley Crew beat Crieff 25-14; 25-23.
