School Teams “Making Progress”

It was “schools’ out” at the Perth & Kinross District Recreational Volleyball League on Sunday evening with four local schools all competing at Bell’s Sports Centre on Sunday evening.

First up was the meeting of Strathallan and St John’s Academy and quite a tussle it turned out to be. The sides traded points right up until the score reached 19 all before St Juans eased ahead to win the first set 25-20. The second set saw St Juans storm to a 16-6 lead but a remarkable turnaround saw Strathallan dominate to level the match with a 25-22 score in their favour, taking the match to a third set decider. Strathallan maintained their momentum to record victory by 7 points to 3.

Strathallan then faced Kinross but found themselves on the receiving end with Kinross winning 25-10; 25-13.

Strathallan’s final game of the evening saw them face up to Tay Pearls and the pupils picked off Pearls to win the first set 25-15. The second set saw a complete turnaround with Pearls winning by a similar score. The thrid set was a nervous affair with both sides looking for victory. With the scores tied at 11 points each and the final rally in progress it was Strathallan who collected the bonus points in a really close encounter.

Pearls other match was against Aberfeldy and the sides traded points till 12 all then Pearls crept ahead to finally win by 25 points to 22. The second set saw Pearls establish an early lead and hold on to win 23-16.

It was the turn of Crieff and Kinross High School teams next with Crieff having the upper hand thanks to their experienced players winning 25-8; 25-19. They followed this up by edging out Motley Crew, wining both sets 25-18.

The Aberfeldy match against Motley Crew also turned out to be a close one with the Breadalbane side wining the first set 25-21, only for Crew to draw level, winning the second set 25-17. It was Crew who collected the bonus points leading 13-9 at full time.

Kinross rounded off their evening with a second victory, putting them up to second place in the league, defeating Tay Pearls in both sets by 25 points to 14.

Jayne Cafferty’s league leaders Nae Fear maintained their 100% record with easy wins against the two school teams from St John’s and Kinross.

It’s back to Perth College this coming Sunday for another round of Recreational League fixtures which sees first play second in the opening match as Nae Fear aim to maintain their impressive start to the season against challengers Kinross. The PLUS Perth team has the chance to move into second place if they win their three games, having played two fewer games than Kinross.
