Volleyball Close Encounters

Premier league teams met at Perth College on Sunday evening for their final round of 2023 fixtures and a number of games were very closely contested. 

First up was Ellen Ranklin’s league leaders, Team Fife when they met the local Eagles’ side. It was the Fife side who came out on top winning both sets 25-17. On court two it was league cup winners Clackers who were up against second placed Dodgy Spikers with Spikers winning 25-19; 25-10 to maintain their league challenge. Team Fife also recorded victory against Clackers 25-11; 25-13 before the top two teams faced each other with the first set going to Jamie Salvin’s Dodgy Spikers 25-18. The second set was evenly matched with the score standing at 12 points each with 4 minutes remaining. It was the Fife side which led 18-15 at full time to keep them in top spot. Spikers lost their chance to retain the top spot when they lost to other local side Mental Blocks 25-18; 18-17. Blockers were also involved in two other close matches when they drew with Clackers, winning the first set 25-20 with Clackers winning the second set 25-20. Spikers other game against Andy Gunn’s Kinross side was also close with Spikers winning the first set 25-21 and Kinross leading in the second set 19-18. Kinross also won against Crieff 26-24; 12-10. Iain Cook’s Perth team won the first set against Kinross 25-18 but were behind 27-26 in the second. In the other games Perth beat Crieff 25-14; 25-18, Eagles beat Perth 27-25; 11-6 and beat Crieff 25-15; 11-19.

6:35 Aberfeldy v Tay Pearls (Motley Crew); Kinross v Paris Diggers (Nae Fear) 

7:10 PLUS Perth v All Stars (Tay Pearls); Team Fife v Paris Diggers (Aberfeldy) 

7:45 Team Fife v PLUS Perth (Aberuthven Acers); Kinross High v Nae Fear (Crieff) 

8:20 All Stars v Motley Crew (Kinross); Crieff v Aberuthven Acers (Kinross High) 

8:55 Kinross High v Aberuthven Acers (All Stars); Crieff v Motley Crew (Team Fife). 

In Scottish Volleyball’s Secondary Schools’ Cup competition local schools have been drawn to play their round one matches by the second of February: 

Boys’ Competition – St John’s Academy v Kinross High School. 

Falkirk High School v Crieff High School 

Girls’ Competition – Kinross High School v Forres Academy. 

Scottish Open Volleyball Tournament 

With the announcement of uncertainty surrounding   Bell’s Sports Centre, the popular annual tournament held over the last weekend of May hass relied on access to Bell’s Sports Centre for its computerized administration system as well as showers and toilets over the weekend where over 100 teams from around the UK and Europe meet. The tournament organising committee will need to schedule a meeting with Perth & Kinross Council representatives in early January to discuss possible alternative provision to cater for the administration of the 2024 tournament which attracts a substantial revenue for the supply of local catering and accommodation.
