Les Sikora’s Eagles side soared on Sunday winning both of their fixtures to tuck in behind league leaders Dodgy Spikers at Bell’s Sports Centre on Sunday evening.
Eagles opened against Kinross and won the first set easily as Michael Donaldson’s side seemed out of sorts. The second set saw Kinross take an early lead at 12-8 but a run of Eagles points soon levelled the set. With the score still level at 22 points each it was Eagles who sealed victory by winning the next three vital points.
Eagles then played Iain Cook’s young Perth Volleyball Club team and the first set was closely contested with Eagles just ahead at 19-18 but they went on another run of points to win 25-18. The second set followed a similar pattern and finished with a similar score-line 25-18 to move Eagles to second place in the league.
Jamie Salvin’s league leaders opened against Perth VC and maintained their winning ways by two sets to love. Spikers second match was against Ellen Ranklin’s young Team Fife side. This was a very close encounter with the Fife side having set point at 25-24 but Spikers weren’t finished and they pipped their Fife opponents by taking the first set 27-25. The second set saw the league leaders storm to a 14-5 lead before the Fifers got back into their stride. The Fifers’ late revival wasn’t enough, however, as full time was called with the score at 19 points to 14 in Spikers’ favour.
Team Fife was involved in another close match when they face Ian McGrath’s Mental Blocks. Blockers won the first set 25-19 but Team Fife stormed back to take the second set 25-12 just as full time was called resulting in the first drawn match of the season.
Blockers then met Kinross and again it was close with Kinross taking the first set 25-22 and Blockers looked like gaining points as they led 19-15 with one minute remaining but they couldn’t quite hold on as Kinross drew level at 19 points each as the full-time whistle sounded.
