American beach volleyball pro player Seain Cook was back in Perth and returned to Bell’s Sports Centre on Sunday evening, the place where he started playing competitive volleyball with a Perth Juniors’ team in the local recreational league.
Along with father, local coach Iain, Seain was supporting the next generation of Perth & Kinross youngsters with encouragement and advice to the many youngsters now competing in the local leagues.
Sunday evening saw the return of the Premier League with leaders Dodgy Spikers looking to continue their undefeated run and stay in pole position.
Les Sikora’s Eagles were first on court against Ian McGrath’s Mental Blocks, the teams lying in second and third positions respectively. The first set saw Eagles’ early domination take them to a 21-12 lead but a late fightback came too late for Blockers as the set finished 25-19 in Eagles’ favour. The second set was evenly matched until the score reached 14 points each. Blockers then got their act together taking control with a run of 11 points for a loss of two to level the match with a 25-16 score. With only one minute remaining on the clock the third set decider kicked off and there was only time for one serve and the point went to Blockers for the narrowest of victories one nil taking them above their second-place rivals.
Eagles then faced Stuart Anderson’s Dodgy Spikers with Spikers making a sluggish start to the first set, having to come from behind to win 25-21. The second set saw Spikers continue where they left off finishing strongly to record a 25-18 win. Spikers continued their wining ways against Kinross winning comfortably by two sets to love.
Mental Block then met the Perth Junior team and a very close first set saw Blockers edge ahead of their young opponent 25-23. The second set was a different story with Blockers running away with a more straightforward win to secure second place in the league, overtaking Eagles.
The Perth junior side then played Ellen Ranklin’s young Team Fife with the Fife side taking the early lead before Perth fought back to win the first set 25-21. The second set saw a reversal of fortunes with Team Fife winning 25-20 to take a share of the points.
Final match of the evening saw Team Fife play Kinross and this one turned out to be another close fought affair. The first set saw Kinross dominate to win 25-13 but the second set saw the Fife side dig in to level the match with a 25-20 win. With two minutes remaining on the clock the third set decider saw the Fife side win 2-1.
